An open letter to the Lunford’s Music Family,

It is with mixed emotions that I share the decision publicly that I have been pondering for some time now.  After nearly 40 years of being part of this family, and after more than 40 years for the local business that my late husband, Daniel Lunsford, started in his basement, it is nearing time to close the doors on Lunford’s Music.

As you may remember, Daniel took his passion for music and wanted to share it with music programs far and wide, connecting with band and orchestra directors in schools all over East Tennessee.  We met, in fact, while I was still Band Director at Scott High School. His routine included traveling to all the outlying counties with supplies of wind reeds and brass oil stocked in his car, wanting to support music education.

Throughout the years, your support by especially renting band instruments for your school-aged students built the main portion of our business.  While we offered sales and lessons at what is now our Western Avenue location, we’ve also been blessed to be able to repair and maintain your instruments all these years.  Your support helped us build decades of a family business with local employees.  I also appreciate the loving support of my current husband, Andy Rogers, in a business that has required long hours.

If you are renting an instrument from us now, you should have received a letter explaining that you get first choice to purchase that instrument at a special price between now and June 16.  As unpurchased rental instruments return to our store, we will be offering final sales of those immediately and everything in the store this summer.  The repair shop will also be closing soon. Follow us online for updates.

This is not an easy decision, but it is time for me to focus on family during my retirement years.  Throughout this store closing process, I want to be sure we put children first, from your family’s music needs to the needs of each and every band and orchestra program we have served. I am truly grateful for the years we’ve had together, bringing music to the lives of local children.

With Love,

Sonja Lunsford Rogers

….. WE PUT CHILDREN FIRST!…..

OUR BEGINNINGS

Lunsford’s Musical Instruments was launched in 1981 by the late Daniel E. Lunsford. Owner Sonja Lunsford began working with the company in 1983, and later married Daniel in 1985, and continues Daniel’s legacy to this day. She heads a fine staff with many years of musical experience and a vast knowledge of a broad range of instruments and accessories. Head Technician Walter Spears has over 40 years of musical instrument repair experience, and provides professional repair service for all of our customers’ instruments. Our talented repair staff is more than happy to serve you.

THE IMPORTANCE OF MUSIC

Many recent scientific studies have proven that involvement in the study of music and pursuit of musical knowledge carries over to all area’s of a person’s life, creatively, emotionally, intellectually and socially. There are probably many reasons why Lunsford’s Musical Instruments have been twice awarded “Music Inc.” Magazine’s band and Orchestra Retailing Excellence Award (an award that recognized Lunsford’s out of 10,000 music stores nationwide). We feel the most important reason for all the awards and continuing success is the fact that…………WE PUT CHILDREN FIRST!

MUSIC LASTS A LIFETIME

We are fortunate that music does not have to end at the high school graduation. A musician can continue their music in college as a music major, music minor, or just for fun. Many churches have instruments in their services. Community bands gather weekly and play at several events during the year. We have the Knoxville Symphony and Wind Symphony, live musical performances from the jazz bands, the big bands, ensemble groups, and more.

It is never too late to start playing the instrument of your choice. And yes, Lunsford’s Musical Instruments teaches kids of all ages! So whether you have goals to be a professional musician or you just enjoy playing for family and friends, keep music in your life.
